What Is Anxiety?

Feeling nervous or anxious at times is a normal reaction.

However, when the symptoms of anxiety disrupt healthy daily living or prevent you from participating in work or family-related activities, it must be addressed. The diagnostic Statistic Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM V) defines generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) as, “Excessive anxiety and worry (apprehensive expectation), occurring more days than not for at least 6 months, about a number of events or activities (such as work or school performance).”

Anxiety can also cause physical symptoms including but not limited to:

  • Heart Palpitations (feeling like you may be having a heart attack)
  • Excessive Sweating
  • Sweaty palms
  • Dizziness
  • Shortness of breath
  • Nausea
  • Gastrointestinal problems

What Are the Different Types of Anxiety?

Anxiety disorders vary and can cause a variety of symptoms. Some of the disorders related to anxiety we treat at Saguaro Behavioral Health are generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorders, social anxiety, and phobias.

How Is Anxiety Treated?

Saguaro Behavioral Health uses evidence-based treatment modalities such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT) to help you manage (and possibly even alleviate altogether) your symptoms. CBT can assist by helping clients identify distorted thoughts that contribute to symptoms of anxiety.

DBT can provide an individual with the skills necessary for managing symptoms of anxiety through mindfulness, emotion regulation, interpersonal effectiveness, and distress tolerance.

If you want to get a better handle on your anxiety and learn how to live free from the symptoms, schedule an appointment at Saguaro Behavioral Health by calling the office or booking online today.
